December 17th is International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers ❤️

Have you ever watched a crime T.V. show and noticed how many episodes centre around the murder, abuse, or kidnapping of sex workers? This isn't just a plotline - this is a reality for sex workers internationally.

Personal and societal stigma and discrimination towards autonomous sex work fuels violence towards sex workers, putting folks at an increased risk of abuse, mental health concerns, and death.

Today, we empower & celebrate sex workers in our communities while remembering the lives lost to violence and hate crime.

Everyone deserves safety, acceptance, love, and protection under the law. #SexWorkIsWork #DecriminalizeSexWork #DestigmatizeSexWork

P.S. The red umbrella is recognized as an international symbol for sex worker's rights!

Today is the final day of #16DaysOfActivism2021

Today, we invite you to lean into self reflection 💭

To think about what motivates your activism, whether you continue to advocate behind closed doors, or when it is uncomfortable to do so, and how you can best support survivors of sexual violence and gender based violence.

Reflection is apart of growing, and charting the path forwards, we hope that folks are able to engage in this practice and continue to implement small pieces of activism to create a large change in the coming days, weeks, months, and years ⚡️

The time is now to end gender based violence.

Day 15 of #16DaysofActivism 🦋

Have you ever heard, "This could happen to someone you know", or "Imagine if this happened to your sibling, or your parent?"

This is not the best practice of spreading awareness about gender-based violence, especially to get folks engaged in this work.

☁️Care because it's important.
☁️Care because it needs to end.
☁️Care because it's a pervasive issue.
☁️Care because people continue to be harmed.
☁️Care because people continue to die.
☁️Care because it is a human right for everyone to live in a violence-free world.

Day 15 of #16DaysOfActivism is today 💜

Writing to local representatives, such as MPs and MPPs is a fantastic way to make your voice heard, and stand up for causes that matter to you, such as #GBV

The link in our bio entitled "Write to Your MP Tips" is article we think is useful for figuring out where to start for this form of advocacy. Some examples of issues you could write about include:
✨The impacts of COVID-19 on sexual violence and gender based violence, and the need to create an action plan
✨Recent cases of sexual assault that have been decided by the courts in a troubling manner
✨Why sexual violence is an issue that matters to your community

Happy letter writing!

Today is December 6th, the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. It is also day 13 of #16DaysOfActivism. To be an activist today is to reflect on this tragedy and the current state of #GBV and #femicide in Canada.

It is a day to mourn the loss of 14 young women, who were murdered at Polytechnique Montréal on December 6, 1989. It is a day to recognize that gender-based violence and femicide is not an issue of the past. It is present today and we must continue to raise awareness, disrupt discriminatory patterns and systems, and advocate for equity and safety for all.

SAVIS has created a virtual vigil, posted to Youtube, which you can find by clicking the link in our bio entitled "December 6th Vigil". This video includes some words from our Executive Director, and is intended to provide folks with a few moments of silence and remembrance for the women who were murdered on this day in 1989.

Further, we take time to remember Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two Spirit people, and women of Ontario who were murdered in acts of femicide in 2020- 2021.
